Hailing from Britain, Benjamin embarked on his inaugural journey to the Maldives aboard flight EY278 from Abu Dhabi. The anticipation was palpable as he looked forward to a tranquil and rejuvenating stay at Villa Nautica, immersing himself in the breathtaking beauty and serenity of the Maldives.

 

At the airport, Benjamin Duncan Moore was warmly received by a dedicated welcoming committee, comprising representatives from various key entities including the Ministry of Tourism, MMPRC, Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), Maldives Immigration, Dhivehi Raajjeyge Gulhun Public Limited (Dhiraagu), and Crossroads Maldives.

The Tourism Minister, Honourable Ibrahim Faisal, added a personal touch to the welcome, joined by other notable figures such as Mr. Mohamed Bassam Adam, Deputy Managing Director of MMPRC; Mr. Ibrahim Hareef, Deputy Chief Officer of AOCC & Customer Relations at MACL; Mr. Ali Sunan, Deputy Head of Airport Division and Deputy Chief Immigration Officer; Mr. Mohamed Mirshan Hassan, Director Brand and Marketing Communications at Dhiraagu; and Mr. Alexander Traeger, the General Manager of Crossroads Maldives.

This represents a noteworthy 12.3% increase compared to the same period in 2022, showcasing the enduring allure and resilience of the Maldives as a top-tier travel destination.

Breaking down the numbers, the Ministry of Tourism provided a monthly snapshot of arrivals throughout the year:

India has emerged as the frontrunner in contributing to the Maldives’ tourism success, with 206,026 tourists, closely followed by Russia with 204,043 visitors. China, the United Kingdom, and Germany have also played substantial roles, bringing in 185,976, 152,764, and 132,884 tourists, respectively. The top ten source markets are rounded out by Italy, the USA, France, Spain, and Switzerland, illustrating the Maldives’ global allure.

A considerable disruption has occurred in the Maldives, where over 8,000 hotel bookings and 2,500 flight tickets were reportedly canceled following social media posts accusing Maldivian Minister Mariyam Shiuna of making derogatory remarks against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It is said that these comments, posted on Twitter in response to images of Lakshadweep, labeled PM Modi as a ‘clown’ and a ‘puppet of Israel‘.

Maldivians Condemn Minister’s Controversial Behavior

Mariyam Shiuna’s comments drew sharp criticism from Maldivian citizens, with one expressing disappointment, “What a shame you are bringing to this nation by stooping so low to even reply to these posts in such a childish way. You are MINISTERS of our government. ACT LIKE IT!! Your actions will affect others, not you. You will leave the ordinary Maldivians to suffer the consequences. If you cared about them at all, you would not have acted so disgracefully.”

Another concerned citizen questioned the need for such a response, stating, “I don’t understand PM Modi did not even mention Maldives in his tweet then why is this bad mouth by Maldives ministers and their supporters? Why behaving like Pakistani ministers? Very unfortunate and disappointing. It will cause very bad results! (sic)” These comments reflect the public’s dissatisfaction with the ministers’ behavior and highlight the potential repercussions for both the nation and its citizens.

 

Former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed has strongly criticized Mariyam Shiuna for her use of “appalling language” against PM Modi. In a tweet, Nasheed expressed his concern, stating, “What appalling language by Maldives Government official Mariyam Shiuna towards the leader of a key ally, that is instrumental for Maldives’ security and prosperity. Dr Mohamed Muizzu government must distance itself from these comments and give clear assurance to India they do not reflect gov policy.”

Nasheed’s remarks highlight the importance of maintaining diplomatic decorum and the potential impact of such comments on the relationship between Maldives and India. Given the significant contribution of Indian tourists to the Maldives’ tourism-dependent economy, Nasheed underscores the need for the government to clarify its stance and reassure India that Shiuna’s comments do not represent official policy. This incident underscores the delicate balance between international relations and the economic interests of a nation.
